Monday

We will be using GRAPES to study the Americas, Fertile Crescent, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Byzantine, Pre-Colonial Africa, China, India, Japan, and Korea. We are starting our geography unit with the five themes of geography (location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, region).

Use the 5 themes to draw conclusions about the emergence, expansion and decline of civilizations, societies and regions

Wednesday

PLACE

Review the two definitions of PLACE -

Cultural (dealing with people, or anything that was created by a person)

Physical (dealing with the natural world).

You will be assigned a location to research!

Your task: Research cultural and physical characteristics of that place.

Reminder! Research cultural characteristics like food and language as well as physical characteristics like landforms and climate.

Human Interaction and Environment:

Today you will examine the ways in which humans adapt and change their environment and determine the effects it has on the environment.

MOVEMENT

Today you will use the powerpoint to get a better understanding of the Push and Pull factors for migrations, why people, goods and ideas move.

 

  1. You will complete a 3 way tie.

  2. Select three ideas about migration and arrange theme in a triangle.  

  3. Connect the ideas with line and explain the relationship between each idea by writing along the lines.

Read What is... Latitude and Longitude.  

Write an anticipation statement about how using latitude will help you draw conclusions about the civilizations you will study this year.

MAP PRACTICE

Absolute vs Relative Location

What's the difference?

 

Use your map of South America to determine absolute versus relative locations. Then, find the absolute and relative location using a map of the school.

In the textbook, review the 5 Themes of Geography on pages 10-15.
